My life is about to take on a radical transition.
It has often occurred to me that I spend too much time on things that matter too little. It has also occurred to me in the past year that, for an English major, I have not read enough.
I, unfortunately, do not possess the self control which prevents me from spending hours browsing through my dashboard until I’m caught up; I love the blogs I follow too dearly to unfollow them.

I rented Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy tonight because my internet is spotty and I needed something to distract me from my crippling anxiety. I enjoyed it immensely and even understood an obscure reference to a bit of English culture that I learned in my British and Irish Culture course.
Then the anxiety rushed back in (after a bit of geeking out) because my professor still has not put in my grade.

It’ll be in OASIS before Degreeworks! Degreeworks refreshes every night searching for the grades from OASIS. If you log into OASIS, go to Student Records and the Grade Report, it’ll be up to date before Degreeworks.
Ahhh thank you! Why didn’t I know this?
Unfortunately, it’s still not in.
Obsessively refreshing Degree Works to see if my British Studies professor has put the grade that decides a huge portion of my future in yet.

The life I want there is no shortcut.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that not everyone I grew up with wants the same thing as I do. Also, that it’s okay for us to want different things.
Even though I am going to do something amazing.

ESQUIRE MAGAZINE: You guys are from North Carolina — can you describe what it’s like to people who’ve never visited?
SCOTT AVETT: I can. North Carolina is divided into three parts: the coast, with the outer banks and the beaches; then you have the Piedmont, rolling hills and a lot of green; and then the mountains. You get a lot of variety in North Carolina, and you get a lot of progressive rural living, as well as conservative rural living, but it’s a terrific state and it’s a good example of America working, I think. It has its pitfalls and its problems, but don’t we all.

Let’s not completely ignore and invalidate the individuals who fought so hard to end this disgusting slew of bigotry.
People fought much, much too passionately for you to write off an entire state as “backwoods.”
The North Carolina trending tweet is making me sick. Like sooooooooooo many celebrities telling the ENTIRE state that it should be ashamed. So much...

I stumbled into my house after my last exam, recounted my efforts to my roommate, and then walked 7 feet and passed out, face first, on couchboat for 3 hours.
My hand will never be the same.

I am so stressed out over my British and Irish Studies final because I know how difficult the midterm was and this is going to be even more difficult and now I’m just going to crawl into a study space from now until then.
Norah Jones
I like her new album but I don’t love it - and that makes me sad. Norah Jones is probably one of my favorite artists. Think less of Come Away with Me and more like Not Too Late and The Fall.
The Fall is definitely in my top 10 albums. “Light as a Feather” is perfect (probably helps that she wrote it with Ryan Adams) and “Even Though” somehow manages to articulate a...

Things I like about my life right now:
local half-n-half
the extra coffee my roommate brewed this morning
hard-boiled eggs
calorie counters
a clean(er) kitchen and room
my job
Things I don’t like about my life right now:
the only grade I have from my most important class is my midterm
which isn’t great - I have turned in 5 other assignments to him
I have no idea what my grade...

I had a long discussion with some fellow English majors yesterday after our study group. I told them which class I was most excited about taking in the fall and the general consensus between them was the professor is also one of the very best in the English department.
I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

Nothing Short of Thankful
My last day of work at my old job is tomorrow.
Athens is so cute. I like living here.
Nerding out over my notes for British and Irish Studies.
Ginger Green tea and English tea biscuits.
I found an extra $34 in a pile of things that I absolutely forgot about.
Also, a $15 iTunes giftcard. So I bought
Ryan Adam’s iTunes Session. It’s beautiful, of course.
Music Midtown tickets!...

Open Yale Courses and Other Free Ivy League Online... →
While I was working a few weeks ago, I caught a glimpse of a headline on the news that suggested some of the Ivy Leagues offered free online courses.
Naturally, it caught my attention. It has always been my dream to go to an Ivy League because I often fancy myself a serious and studious academic whose only job is to become a more enlightened and intellectual individual.
I’ve known about...
